Rotherham are set to sign Trevor Clarke from Shamrock Rovers, according to journalist Andy Giddings.

Giddings suggests Clarke has agreed a three-year contract in a deal which could represent good long-term value for The Millers.

The 21-year-old has impressed in the Irish league and already has 86 appearances under his belt, so will arrive with a bit of know-how and understanding of the physical level that is required of him.

It will be a big step up to a League One side chasing promotion. He only has five goals and two assists despite often playing at left-midfield so far in his career, which could be a cause for concern.

However, he has also featured at left-back for Rovers and that versatility is likely a big reason why Paul Warne brought him to the club.

Joe Mattock has cemented himself as the club's first-choice left-back over the last few years but there could be a vacant position further forward with Anthony Forde having left the club.

It presents a great chance for Clarke to make an immediate impact, but he will have to be at the top of his game to make a good impression on his new boss.

The Verdict

This could be a great gamble by Warne but it is one which is as likely to end in failure as success.

A lot will depend on the responsibility the player is given next season. If he is expected to be a regular starter then that is a big ask. He has no experience of the EFL and is still young and raw, so will need to learn a lot to be ready for Warne's style of play.

He is direct and energetic though, and that should work in his favour if given an opportunity to impress from the bench.
