Ross Stewart sends a message to his Sunderland teammates as they reach the play-off final

Sunderland were able to produce a late goal against Sheffield Wednesday yesterday to secure themselves a spot in the play-off final, where they will come up against Wycombe Wanderers.

The Black Cats went into the game 1-0 ahead on aggregate from the first leg but Sheffield Wednesday looked like they were going to take the draw to extra time.

However, a 93rd minute equaliser courtesy of Patrick Roberts who got on the end of Jack Clarke’s low cross saw Sunderland through to the final without having to play any extra minutes.

However Ross Stewart, scorer of Sunderland’s goal in the first leg, has reminded his teammates that the job isn’t yet done as he told The Chronicle: “It’s obviously a team where I’ve scored well and hopefully that can continue but we also realise, watching them over their two legs, how tough a game it’s going to be.

“We’ve got over a week now to prepare for that so we’ll rest up well and I’m sure the gaffer wills set us up well and we’ll look forward to it.

“The full season goes out of the window, it’s one game now and it all comes down to this one game. We’ve done excellent over these two legs and throughout the season but that doesn’t really matter. We’ve got to go there and try and take care of the job, hopefully we can.

“We’ll enjoy it, it’s not every season you get to play at a stadium like Wembley in a joyous occasion. We’ll enjoy it but, at the same time, we’re well aware that the job’s not done so after tonight and tomorrow, the focus will turn to a week on Saturday.”

WHO DID THE CLUB BEAT ON THE OPENING DAY OF THE SEASON?

The Verdict:

Of course reaching the play-off final is a brilliant achievement for Sunderland and something worth celebrating. However, as Stewart points out, the job isn’t done yet and they still have a big job to overcome if they are to achieve promotion this season.

The manner in which Sunderland have made it to the play-off final will have given them a boost for the game as they will have faith in their attitude and know that they are always able to get something back in the game .

That being said, the Black Cats won’t want to celebrate too much yet as they know the job that is coming their way is a massive one that will require a lot of hard work from the team.

Wycombe have proved to be a difficult side over their two legs of play-off action against MK Dons so far and will no doubt be similar in the final.
