Jack Ross has provided a fitness update on a number of key Sunderland players ahead of the weekend's clash with Oxford United.

Ross has revealed that centre-back Glenn Loovens, who limped out of the Black Cats win away to AFC Wimbledon, and Adam Matthews remain serious doubts.

The trio of Aiden McGeady, Duncan Watmore and Jerome Sinclair have been ruled out completely as they continue to recover from long-term injuries.

Sunderland have made an impressive start to life in League One, winning four out of their first five league games.

That fast start leaves Sunderland second in the League One table, with Ross' side having 13 points from a possible 15 at this early stage of the season.

Currently, only Peterborough United have a better record.

The verdict

Of course, it is a blow to have so many players on the sidelines, but Ross will not be too concerned given how many others he has available to him.

Jack Baldwin and Alim Ozturk are available to fill in in defence, whilst Donald Love should continue.

Ross has done a terrific job since arriving at the Stadium of Light and Sunderland appear to be heading in the right direction for the first time in years.

Thoughts, Sunderland fans?
