West Brom moved back to the top of the Championship after a 1-0 win against Preston at Deepdale last night.

Despite dominating the first half, Albion were extremely fortunate to pick up maximum points, with Kyle Edwards diving to win a late penalty, which was calmly dispatched by Charlie Austin in the last minute of normal time.

That inflicted a first defeat on North End on their own turf, so it was a huge win for the Baggies and even though they started well, it was a much tougher second period.

Slaven Bilic's side had to show fight and heart on occasions, with Nathan Ferguson's block a perfect example of that.

The full-back threw himself to block a goalbound effort after the hosts had broke - following an uncharacteristic error from Romaine Sawyers.

The classy midfielder has been outstanding this season but he needed to be bailed out by his teammate last night and Sawyers took to Twitter to thank Ferguson this evening.

It turned out to be a defining moment in the game as the late goal put the Baggies seven points of third place ahead of the weekend fixture at home to Swansea.

The verdict

This is good to see from Sawyers, although I'm sure everyone connected with Albion will forgive the midfielder one mistake!

The West Brom player nationality quiz – Can you get 20 out of 20?

He has been superb this season but he wasn't at his best last night, particularly in the second half when the whole team struggled to get going.

But, it's the sign of a good group that they can grind out wins and that's exactly what they did last night in what was a huge win.
