Late goals from Lys Mousset and David McGoldrick proved to be the difference for Sheffield United as they claimed a vital 2-1 victory against Stoke City yesterday, boosting their chances of entering the promotion mix.

Jacob Brown's strike ten minutes after half-time looked set to consign the Blades to their third consecutive league defeat after away losses at Middlesbrough and AFC Bournemouth before the international break, but the introduction of Mousset and McGoldrick after the hour mark proved to be crucial, with the latter making a particularly big impact.

Coming on for Iliman Ndiaye in the 77th minute, he supplied the assist for Mousset's equaliser three minutes later before smartly converting Enda Stevens' cross from the left-hand side to steal all three points for the Blades.

Sitting in 14th place before this fixture, they have climbed up one spot, are now closing in on the play-off zone and are currently just five points adrift of sixth-place Huddersfield Town in their quest to get back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Considering they won just two points from a possible 15 in their opening five league matches before the first international break of the season, this is a great achievement and they have 33-year-old McGoldrick to thank for the victory.

He proved to be one of the only forwards who stepped up to the plate in what was a torrid season for the South Yorkshire outfit last term, still managing to score eight Premier League goals despite his side's finish at the foot of the top-flight table.
