Blackburn Rovers’ move for Ben Brereton is still alive, with the Ewood Park club in hot pursuit of the Nottingham Forest forward.

Reports last weekend from The Sun credited Blackburn with an improved £8m bid for the forward, with the view to taking him on loan until January and then making the deal permanent when the transfer window reopens.

Alan Nixon, who originally broke the story, has confirmed that Blackburn’s move for Brereton is still alive, despite a rival showing a late interest in the striker.

Brereton, 19, has been involved with Forest’s first-team for over 18 months now, but finds himself firmly on the fringe under Aitor Karanka this season, with the Spaniard looking to strengthen his squad with a number of other forward options over the course of the summer.

In 57 first-team appearances for Forest, Brereton has just nine goals to his name.

Last year, in a struggling Forest side, he scored on just five occasions in 35 fixtures.

That type of form led Karanka to bring in the likes of Hillal Soudani and Lewis Grabban, whilst Daryl Murphy, who was equally disappointing last season, has also gained a chance.

Blackburn reportedly remain keen, though, and according to Nixon, the loan to buy offer might be hard to resist.

The Verdict

Blackburn are clearly big admirers of Brereton, with Mowbray desperately looking to strengthen his attacking options.

Brereton’s record isn’t brilliant, but at 19, he has the makings of a good forward, who will improve.

Karanka and Forest haven’t managed to get the best out of him, but Mowbray could be the man to do just that.
