Riley McGree sends message to Birmingham City fans after club statement

Riley McGree has thanked Birmingham City’s fans for the support that they gave him during his time at St Andrew’s.

As confirmed by the club’s official website, the Australian has now returned to his parent-club Charlotte FC who are set to kick-off their inaugural Major League Soccer campaign in February.

Having made 15 appearances for the Blues in a separate loan spell last season, McGree rejoined Birmingham on a temporary basis earlier this year.

During his second stint with the Championship side, the midfielder produced some impressive performances at this level as he played 13 league games for the club.

As well as providing his team-mates with two assists in this division, McGree managed to find the back of the net in the club’s victories over Swansea City and Bristol City.

The midfielder was denied the opportunity to end his time at Birmingham on a positive note as their scheduled clashes with Fulham and Peterborough United were postponed earlier this month.

After his departure was announced by Birmingham, McGree decided to send a message to the club’s supporters.

In a video shared by the club’s official Twitter account, the 23-year-old said: “Hi guys, it’s Riley McGree here, I’m sorry I didn’t get to say bye at a home game here at the stadium but I want to say a massive thank you for the past 15 months.

“Thank you for your support and everything you fans at the club have done for me.

Did Birmingham ever loan Che Adams to Sheffield United?

“Keep right on and hopefully [I’ll] see you soon.”

The Verdict

When you consider that McGree managed to average an impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.02 in the Championship for Birmingham this season, his departure is a major blow for the club.

However, given that Blues boss Lee Bowyer has known for a long time that the midfielder was set to leave in January, it would be somewhat of a shock if he doesn’t already have a replacement lined up.

By securing the services of an individual who has a proven track-record of delivering the goods at this level, Birmingham could potentially push on in this division.

As for McGree, he will be looking to use the experience that he has gained during his time at St Andrew’s to his advantage as he embarks on a new chapter in his career with Charlotte FC.
