Riis in: The best combined Preston North End XI from the last 5 years – Do you agree?

This has hardly been the most inspiring season for Preston North End, who sit 17th in the Championship table.

They’ll likely have enough to avoid getting sucked into the relegation battle but not enough to challenge for the play-offs, which means they look set for another season of mid-table mediocrity.

Frankie McAvoy has yet to really convince that he’s the right man to lead Preston forward but there’s an argument to be made that perhaps this set of players are not quite good enough.

The North West club have had some quality performers over the past five years and today, we’ve put together a combined XI from that period (since the start of the 2016/17 campaign)…

Chris Maxwell and Declan Rudd are perhaps unlucky to miss out but the performances of Daniel Iversen since joining on in January have been outstanding.

The Leicester City loanee has quietly been one of the most impressive goalkeepers in the division during that period and that’s what has earned him a place in our side.

Ahead of him, Greg Cunningham and Darnell Fisher are a full-back duo that offer quality both defensive and going forward while a central defensive pair of Ben Davies and Paul Huntington is a no-brainer really.

Alan Browne is another player that’s very unfortunate not to get the nod but quite simply, it was impossible not to pick the midfield trio that we went for.

Ben Pearson is a top-quality Championship defensive midfielder, while Paul Gallagher and Daniel Johnson offer so much ahead of him – not least their contributions in the final third.

Squeezing in both Jordan Hugill (23 goals in 76 games in the last five years) and Emil Riis (14 in 60, including 11 in 21 this season) was vital, which is why the latter has been forced to play on the right of a forward three.

Of all the players in the XI, there’s a strong argument to be made that Callum Robinson is the most talented and were this side real, he’s probably the player that fans would be most excited to see in a Preston shirt again.
