It’s safe to say that Derby County have struggled to recover from their Play-Off Final defeat to Aston Villa last season, with Phillip Cocu coming under scrutiny for his side’s poor start to this year’s league campaign.
Football League World’s Derby fan pundit Lisa Howard has issued her thoughts on the pressure on Cocu, with the Rams currently sat 19th in the Championship table.
“Firstly, I would say that to consider Cocu is under pressure after these small number of games is ridiculous.
“We have had two bad results in the last two games, prior to this the football has been good. The reason fans have got on his back is for the poor team selection against Forest ,which I understand. I don’t agree with whole sale changes against your rivals.
“Cocu is still learning about the Championship and he still doesn’t know his best team, as he has had so many injured players. I think the players are still getting used to his style of play and methods, although the formation is the same as under Lampard.
The regular punter insisted that the Derby boss needs to be given time to find his feet in the Championship, and called on the Pride Park faithful to get behind the 48-year-old.
“To criticise Cocu so early on in his first managerial job in the UK is ridiculous. This was always going to take time, he needs time and the club need stability.
“Football is a game of opinions , and fans have the right to moan, but we need to get behind Cocu, and be patient, it is a tough league for home grown managers , never mind a manger who has never experienced the Championship.”
Howard also felt that the players have to take some of the responsibility for the stuttering start to the season, and claimed that Frank Lampard’s departure in the summer will have impacted some of the current squad that Cocu has available to him.
“I think the players haven’t fully got over losing Lampard, as the team spirit under him was immense. Cocu will have his own methods that some may not like.
“The players need to take some responsibility, and they need to up their game.”
