A number of Barnsley supporters have been bemoaning the performance of Liverpool loanee Herbie Kane following the Tykes' comprehensive 4-0 defeat against promotion-chasing Bournemouth on Friday.

The Tykes headed into the game looking to build on their late turnaround victory against Birmingham City in mid-week, but Barnsley were comfortably swept aside by a clinical Bournemouth performance that saw them punished for making key defensive mistakes at crucial periods in the game by a side who moved to the top of the table with the three points.

Quiz: Which club did Barnsley sell each of these 20 players to?

Kane was making his third start in the Championship since he made the move on loan from Liverpool in the summer, but the midfielder endured a difficult evening as Bournemouth controlled the middle of the park. The 22-year-old lost possession on 12 occasions and could only make 1.3 tackles (Sofascore) as the Cherries took command of the match.

The midfielder’s performance has attracted greater scrutiny after he played a key role in Bournemouth making it 4-0 with 22 minutes still remaining, Kane’s misplaced back pass sent Sam Surridge through on goal and his effort went through Jack Walton’s hands and trickled over the line to compound a poor night for the Tykes.

Many Barnsley fans were quick to bemoan Kane’s role in the fourth goal and his overall performance against Bournemouth, with one fan even suggesting he needs to be sent back to Liverpool which might have been a little bit over the top.

Here then, we take a look at some of the best reactions to Kane’s performance on social media…
