Richie Wellens has revealed the focus of his summer recruitment drive as he looks to improve the fortunes of Swindon Town in League Two next season.

Wellens took over from Phil Brown earlier in the season and has seen the Robins move to within seven points of the play-off spots.

An inability to kill off games they've played well in has set them back this campaign and Wellens is certain he has identified the problem at the County Ground.

"I just think we need a wide man where when it goes out wide, you know there will be quality balls into the box," he told the Swindon Advertiser.

"We haven't got one of them at the club. In this league you need a wide man and you need a free kick specialist who can keep putting the ball on the money."

"My opinion is set on what is required going forward. Do we need wide players? Definitely."

The 38-year-old is currently in his second job as a manager, having been at Oldham Athletic as they tumbled out of League One. He enjoyed an impressive playing career outside the top flight, notably with Doncaster Rovers and Blackpool.

He won the Football League Trophy twice with the Seasiders and enjoyed promotions with both clubs via the play-offs.

The Verdict

Richie Wellens will turn things around at Swindon. He knows these divisions and now he's with a club who will back him firmly, he can be a success.

He inherited Phil Brown's squad and that has taken some remodelling, but with a summer under his belt he should be fine.
