Huddersfield Town defender Richard Stearman reflected on the side’s late win over Hull City, bailing him out after scoring an own goal in the second half.

The Terriers recorded another impressive win over the Tigers meaning they have done the double over Grant McCann’s side this season, after seeing them off 3-0 at the John Smith’s Stadium earlier in the season.

Danny Cowley’s side took a first-half lead through Karlan Grant before a corner caused untold problems for Huddersfield’s defence, to which centre-back Richard Stearman diverted into his own goal, despite his teammates’ best efforts to keep it out.

The goal looked set to see the spoils shared at the KCOM Stadium before Steve Mounie headed in a dramatic late winner for the visitors in the 96th-minute. It wasn’t a vintage performance from either side but a vital three points for Huddersfield to see them move six points clear of the relegation zone.

Following the game, the Terriers were obviously in high spirits and Stearman took to Twitter to react to the result:

After gifting the Tigers a goal in the second half, it was clearly a huge relief for Stearman to see his side win the game anyway. The video depicts jubilant celebrations from the side, with the former Sheffield United man at the heart of it with the travelling supporters.

Can you name where these former Huddersfield players are now?

The verdict

Stearman’s impact has been massive already on the Huddersfield defence, who had been struggling with Tommy Elphick’s injury in recent months.

Cowley has recruited very well to strengthen in key areas, with Stearman coming in to shore up a very shaky defence of late, as they chopped and changed their lineup to cope with overwhelming injury problems.

It was a tough blow to concede a soft own goal from a set-piece but he and his side showed great character to fight back and claim a massive three points.

Stearman will be grateful of Mounie getting him out of jail in the dying moments and now the Terriers will be buoyant as they face another tough away trip to Fulham at the weekend.
