Huddersfield Town centre-back Richard Stearman has allayed fears of relegation at the John Smith’s Stadium this season, claiming that the side will stay up if they play to their own capabilities.

It hasn’t been the easiest welcome back to the Championship for the Terriers since their plummet from the Premier League last season, as they continue a downward turn this season towards the second tier’s bottom-three.

Jan Siewert’s departure early in the season saw Danny Cowley come in and instil quite a lot of positivity back into the club with a mini-resurgence heading towards November. However, injury issues and a loss of consistency led to them slipping back closer and closer to the relegation.

Tommy Elphick’s season-ending knee injury saw Cowley look to plug an alarming gap in the defence in January and did so quite well with Richard Stearman. Since then, the Terriers have looked more assured at the back but have still seen their form dip as those below them continue to pick up wins here and there.

He spoke to the media ahead of Huddersfield’s clash with Bristol City on Tuesday night, eager to stress that the club’s precarious position still remains in their hands and they have the quality to steer clear. He stated this to the club’s official site: "We know if we do our job and get the points we can, it won’t matter what everyone else is doing.

"We have to concentrate on what we do. We are confident we have enough in this dressing room to get out of this dog fight.

"Everyone has to be in this together. We have to stick together as a club. We need to find consistency, win tackles, run hard, do the basics.

"If we do the nitty-gritty right to get points."

The Terriers will be keen to stop a repeat of the reverse fixture where the Robins netted five against Cowley’s side and comprehensively outplayed them on the day.

Do you know where these former Terriers are playing now?

The verdict

Stearman is right in that Huddersfield certainly have the quality in their side to get over the line and safe from relegation this season.

With that being said, they need to start picking up more results as the sides below them continue to get wins.

Stearman has come in and helped shore up what was a very shaky defence prior to that and there is no doubting his influence has had a positive impact.

The experienced characters in the dressing room will be crucial to the Terriers staving off relegation, with the top quality players also needing to step up again.
