Hull City fell to a 1-0 defeat at Luton Town at the weekend, with The Tigers losing their ninth Championship contest of the season.

Grant McCann's side are currently in 22nd place, and their opening day 4-1 victory at Preston North End now feels a very long time ago.

Elijah Adebayo opened the scoring for the hosts in the 17th minute, but The Tigers restricted the home side to very little after that in regard to goalscoring opportunities.

Hull put in a much more spirited second half performance, but they did lack cutting edge in the final third.

The Tigers worked themselves into some good positions with patient build-up play but were unable to score for the ninth time this season.

Speaking to Hull Live about Saturday's match and Hull's struggle to find the back of the net, club captain Richard Smallwood said: “We weren’t quite at it, we conceded another goal early – the first again.

“I thought second half we showed some character like we’ve shown in most games really to come back and create chances – and create open goals, which we’re not taking at the minute and I’m struggling to understand why.

“I don’t know if it's confidence or what, I’m not sure but it’s got to turn.

“It’s not just chances we’re creating, it's open goals so it’s only a matter of time until that changes, so the sooner and the better.”

The verdict

Hull did show fight and did manage to turn the Luton defence a numerous amount of times in that second half, but the problem was creating chances that were clear-cut.

It is quite strange that creating and scoring are two of the more prominent problems within the Hull camp at the moment, given how deadly and relentless they were last season.

Admittedly, the Championship is a big step up, but with the likes of Mallik Wilks, George Honeyman and Keane Lewis-Potter on the pitch, then it is expected that the attacking third would not be the problematic area.

Hull will certainly take some positives from their second half display at Kenilworth Road, especially with Saturday's opposition moving into the play-off positions, but improvements need to be made.
