QPR are looking to open talks with Gareth Ainsworth over the managerial vacancy at the club.

Mark Warburton was dismissed following the expiration of his contract at the end of the current season.

The London club finished 11th in the Championship this year, but suffered a poor run of form that cost the team a chance to compete for a promotion place.

According to West London Sport, the QPR hierarchy will be looking to discuss a move to bring Ainsworth to the club.

The 49-year old is the current manager of Wycombe Wanderers, where he has been in charge since 2012.

Wanderers were unable to secure promotion back to the second division on Saturday afternoon having lost 2-0 in the League One play-off final to Sunderland.

Ainsworth previously played for Rangers from 2003 to 2010 where he made over 140 appearances for the club.

The former winger is still a very popular figure among fans so would be seen as an ideal candidate for the role, especially given his success with Wycombe in the last decade.

The club is looking to bring in an up-and-coming manager as Warburton's replacement, with Ainsworth seen as the club’s first choice.

Newport’s James Rowberry, MK Dons’ Liam Manning and Oxford United’s Karl Robinson are also seen as potential options should the Ainsworth approach culminate in nothing.

The Verdict

Ainsworth has become part of the furniture at Wycombe so it would come as a surprise if he did leave the League One club.

However, his attachment to QPR as a player may be enough to sway his decision in favour of making a move.

The 49-year old has also been linked with the Blackburn Rovers vacancy in recent weeks, which is the club that he is a lifelong fan of.

Now could also be a good time to depart Wycombe having guided them possibly as far as he can in his time there.
