Aston Villa were extremely disappointing in their defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend, with Steve Bruce’s side unable to live with the intensity of Wolves’ play, as goals from Diogo Jota and Leo Bonatini showed the Villans the type of quality it takes to be seen as automatic promotion contenders.

Prior to that victory, Villa were on a magnificent run of form in the Sky Bet Championship, remaining unbeaten since mid-August. Four victories from four prior to the international break had lifted Bruce’s side into play-off contention, yet despite last weekend’s defeat, they still remain just a single point behind sixth placed, Leeds United.

During Villa’s run of four victories in four, Bruce named an unchanged starting XI. However, one player who was criticised by many during that run was Glenn Whelan, who had been partnering Conor Hourihane in central midfield. Whelan was extremely ineffective against Wolves last weekend, with Villa’s ball retention in midfield a major issue.

Here at FLW, we wanted to find out if Villa’s supporters believe it is time for a change in central midfield, and if it is time for Whelan to drop out of the starting XI.

66% of our voters want to see Bruce make a change in midfield, with a large percentage of supporters believing Whelan needs to be dropped for this weekend’s clash with Fulham.

Aston Villa fans… Should Whelan be dropped? Who should replace him? Let us know your thoughts!
