A very interesting summer awaits for Sheffield Wednesday after a turbulent 2018/19 campaign was steered to a promising conclusion by Steve Bruce.

Joining in February after the December sacking of Jos Luhukay, Bruce took the Owls from a potential relegation battle and up into play-off contention.

They may have fallen short of the top-six in the end, but with an entire transfer window and pre-season in which to mould his squad, there is a real chance that they could be challenging for promotion.

And the latest name to be linked with a move to Hillsborough is a familiar one.

Having spent the entire 2018/19 season on loan in Yorkshire, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Josh Onomah is a permanent transfer target of Bruce's, according to Football Insider.

In an injury hit campaign, Onomah still managed to frequently impress, racking up three assists in a variety of midfield roles from just 15 appearances.

At 22, the Spurs man will surely now be looking to settle down at a club and really kick-start his career with his potential yet to be fulfilled.

And there is no better manager than Bruce to help him do that - especially given the history the pair have together.

The 2017/18 season saw him bring Onomah to Villa Park as he led Aston Villa to the cusp of a Premier League return, with the Spurs man playing 33 times, scoring four times and assisting three more.

It was comfortably the best first-team season that Onomah has ever experienced and having shown flashes of his potential between injuries for Wednesday, a permanent move to Hillsborough is one that would surely benefit all parties involved.

This is going to be a huge summer for the Owls. If they get it right, it could very easily be a very successful season.

But getting it right will involve putting all their trust in Bruce. The board must do all they can to bring in the targets he wants and sell the players he does not.

Onomah is someone he clearly has a connection with and he clearly sees great potential in the youngster, so allowing him the chance to unlock it during the 2019/20 campaign is the right way to go.
