West Brom could yet make a move to sign last season's top scorer, Dwight Gayle, in the January transfer window.

The Newcastle United striker was the main catalyst behind Albion's run to the play-offs last season as he fired in more than 20 goals. However, he went back to St James' Park in the summer and then failed to sort out a permanent move back to the Hawthorns.

But now, according to respected journalist Steve Madeley, the club remain keen on Gayle and he did not rule out the possibility of the Baggies making another move for Gayle when the January window opens.

Responding to  question posed on his Q&A on The Athletic, Madeley said:

"The club definitely plans to try, and Gayle definitely enjoyed his time at Albion last season, so there is clearly a chance.

"However, it will hinge partly on how attractive the deal is (he will want some prospect of a permanent move as he is sick of being unsettled), and on how things go at Newcastle between now and then. If they're still struggling for points and goals it could become politically very difficult for them to let a potential goalscorer leave."

Gayle has been left out of the squad, in general, this season by new Newcastle manager Steve Bruce and could well be one of the most sought after striking talents on the market when the January window does open.

The former Crystal Palace man has never quite settled into life in the northeast and could well find himself at the centre of a tug of war after Christmas.

The Verdict

Gayle would be a superb addition for an already impressive looking Albion side.

It's likely Slaven Bilic's men will be flying high come January, so the addition of someone with the quality of Gayle will only strengthen the ranks further.

Gayle knows where the net is, and at Championship level, there are fewer better.
