Reports linking Wolverhampton Wanderers to an £8m move for Sam Gallagher are wide of the mark, according to the Express and Star’s Tim Spiers.

Alan Nixon reported that Wolves were willing to pay £8m for the striker’s service this summer, but reporters close to the club have dismissed those rumours.

However, Wolves are interested in taking Gallagher on-loan from Southampton for the 2017/18 campaign, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side still short of attacking options.

Despite spending millions already this summer, Nuno is keen to add another striker to his squad between now and the end of the transfer window.

Leo Bonatini was signed on a season-long loan last week, and even scored the winning goal in Wolves’ 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday, but Nuno remains keen to sign Gallagher on-loan.

The 21-year-old striker has made just 20 senior appearances for Southampton during his career, but committed his long-term future to the Saints earlier this summer, signing a new four-year deal.

It remains to be seen whether he is handed a regular first-team opportunity in the coming Premier League season, having spent the last two years away from St Mary’s on-loan with MK Dons and Blackburn Rovers.

Last year for Blackburn, Gallagher made 43 Championship appearances, scoring 11 goals.

The Verdict

Gallagher’s decision to sign a new contract with Southampton earlier this summer made the reports suggesting Wolves would pay £8m for his service surprising.

However, Wolves have spent big this summer, showing they are not afraid to part with such large transfer-fees.

If Nuno can negotiate a loan move for Gallagher, Wolves could seriously benefit, with the striker showing last season how much of a threat he can be in the Championship.

Wolves’ squad looks strong, but the addition of a prolific striker between now and the end of the summer would put them well in the race for automatic promotion.
