In the closing stages of the summer transfer window, Peterborough fans could not be blamed for any jangling nerves, with star midfielder Marcus Maddison touted by many with a move away from the club.

The 23-year-old had evolved into one of the most consistent, explosive players in the third tier, and his loss would have constituted a serious blow to the Posh’s title ambitions.

The former Newcastle trainee remained with the club however, and will play a key role in Peterborough’s push for a return to the Championship.

The club have made an excellent start to the new campaign, and four wins from their opening five games has seen the Posh sit proudly at the top of the table at this early stage of the season.

Last season, a mid-table finish was a disappointment to all involved with the club, but winger Maddison will have been delighted with his personal output for the campaign.

Eight goals and twelve assists made the youngster one of the deadliest players in the division, with Peterborough fans left astounded by his wand of a left foot.

This year Maddison has striker Jack Marriott bang in form, with the striker already boasting six goals to his name in only five league starts.

A goalscorer of Marriott’s ability makes Maddison’s job that much easier, and the former Gateshead man can rest easy in the knowledge that his excellent delivery is likely to be met by the goal-hungry striker.

If the pair forge a prolific partnership, it is hard to see Peterborough finishing outside of the top six, and following their electric start to the season, Grant McCann’s men have to be considered the early title favourites.

Posh fans, how confident are you of a title challenge following your start to the new campaign?
