Leeds acted fast to make Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom their top target to replace Thomas Christiansen after the Dane was sacked following a 4-1 thrashing at home to Cardiff City on Saturday.

Heckingbottom has recently signed a new rolling contract at Oakwell, but in actual fact that looks as if it will make Leeds' efforts to secure his services a little easier.

That is not usually how it works but that is because the new deal came with an agreed compensation package that any team hoping to swoop for the man known as "Hecky" would have to pay - as opposed to undertaking the sometimes lengthy process of negotiating the amount with Barnsley.

Journalist Alan Nixon has revealed the value of that compensation package Barnsley look set to be entitled to on Twitter, is £400,000.

The Verdict

Given the price of players these days, £400,000 seems a small price to pay for the man Leeds believe could guide them back to the big time.

It is now clear that Heckingbottom's new contract was just designed to ensure that Barnsley get some compensation if there was a swoop, but the value is hardly likely to put off many suitors and it has not deterred Leeds at all.
