It has long since been clear that Jack Rodwell, who has three caps for England, has no future at the Stadium of Light under Chris Coleman.

Due to their failure to insert a relegation wage drop clause into Rodwell's contract, Sunderland have still been paying the former Manchester City man £70,000 per week since their drop into the Championship, overseen by David Moyes.

Rodwell has reportedly been offered the chance to have his Stadium of Light contract torn up but has refused, as he does not want to be left without a club.

Therefore, it looks like the only way Sunderland will offload the high-earning midfielder before February 1 is by selling him to another club.

That situation moved closer as Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie tweeted that Rodwell is training with Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem, who have taken a number of English youngsters from Chelsea in years gone by.

The Verdict

There is a player in Rodwell and it was interesting to hear him say that he might prefer to continue his career as a centre-half.

He is good enough to play in the top flight in England or in Holland and the sooner this situation is resolved, freeing up Rodwell's huge wages for Coleman to spend on players who can help Sunderland's survival bid, the better for everyone concerned.
