Blackburn Rovers have belatedly put together the promotion push many of their fans expected them to make when the season began, and sit second in League One, albeit on goal difference alone.

The fact that the season's surprise package Shrewsbury Town are hot on their heels means that Rovers manager Tony Mowbray is taking no chances and is heavily investing in his squad during the January transfer window.

Four new men are already through the door at Ewood Park, with the prospect of more to come and journalist Alan Nixon has revealed another player who may be joining Blackburn's promotion push on Twitter.

Nixon revealed that Falkirk's young Republic of Ireland youth international striker Cieran Dunne is at the club for talks and that Blackburn are in pole position to sign him.

The Verdict

I wouldn't necessarily expect this lad to come in and make an instant impact to Mowbray's promotion push but it is another sign of their ambition that they have pushed themselves to the front of the queue to sign him.

Shrewsbury are going to push Blackburn all the way but their greater resources and ability to reinforce the squad in January should just see them sneak into that second automatic promotion spot.
