Keiren Westwood and Jordan Rhodes could be 'handed lifelines' following the appointment of Tony Pulis as Sheffield Wednesday manager.

That's the view of Yorkshire Live reporter Dominic Howson who has been discussing his impact after being named as Garry Monk's replacement on Friday evening.

Pulis has it all to do with the Owls currently sitting in 23rd position in the Sky Bet Championship.

While only 11 games have been played, the former Middlesbrough boss will be under pressure to get off to a good start in order to move the South Yorkshire side away from danger at the earliest opportunity.

A full squad evaluation is likely to place in the coming days, and according to Howson that could spell good news for the likes of Westwood and Rhodes who have found first team opportunities hard to come by of late.

Writing for Yorkshire Live, Howson said: "I can see there being a fair amount of wheeling and dealing in the transfer market in the New Year.

"As for the second part of your question, I actually think Wednesday have got quite a lot of players already on their books to play Pulis's brand of football but I'm sure he will want to bring in a few of his own players.

He added: "I do think there is a possibility that the likes of Westwood and Rhodes could be handed lifelines.

"I think there will be a clean slate for everybody."

The Verdict

The appointment of Tony Pulis is great news for everyone at the club.

A fresh start is exactly what is needed and what we know of the Welsh manager is that he gets results.

Getting the best out of each and every player will be key to that, and so including Keiren Westwood and Jordan Rhodes in his plans could be vital.
