Leeds United target Liam McCarron is set for an 'imminent departure' from League Two side Carlisle United, as reported by the News and Star.

Reports emerged earlier in the month claiming to suggest the 18-year-old was coveted by Marcelo Bielsa's side in a £250,000 switch. He featured in 16 league games for Carlisle last season, with both Derby and Wolves also thought to be keeping tabs.

It seems his departure is now certain for the youngster, who only signed his first professional deal during the last season. Whilst there are no directly attributable quotes in the report, a News and Star source has revealed that his exit is close, but hasn't confirmed the destination.

It does seem likely to be Leeds United, with them reported to have bid the £250,000 asking price.

McCarron is a winger primarily, playing on either the left or right side of the park. He's left-footed and shows typical youthful pace and swift acceleration, as well as an aptitude for taking players on.

The Verdict

McCarron is a prospect, there is no doubt about that. He really caught the eye during his outings for Carlisle last season and the furore over his signature is not by accident.

Leeds would be a good destination too. They play a 4-1-4-1 formation that uses wide players a lot, which means plenty of opportunity for the 18-year-old.

Even if first team football doesn't come straight away, they have a great record of bringing players through into the first team. Last season the likes of Leif Davis, another youngster signed from League Two, came into the first team squad and held their own.

If it is Leeds, this will be a great move for him and for Carlisle, who will likely retain a healthy sell-on clause as well as the initial fee.
