Middlesbrough are likely to have their new manager in place within the next week as they prepare for the new season.

That's according to Teesside Live reporter Philip Tallentire who revealed that he has been told an appointment is getting closer.

"I think there’s a fair chance there’ll be announcement by the end of the week. That’s not a promise but from what we’re hearing there should be a announcement this week or early next."

Boro endured a season to forget under Tony Pulis as the side missed out on the play-offs on the final day, with Derby beating them to sixth position.

And, the direct style adopted by the experienced boss had angered fans, so it was no surprise when it was confirmed that Pulis had left shortly after the season ended.

Since then, owner Steve Gibson has been on the lookout for a successor to the ex-Stoke boss, with coach Jonathan Woodgate and promotion winner Slavisa Jokanovic two names in the frame.

Whoever the new manager is will then have a busy few months as they try to build a squad capable of winning promotion.

The Verdict

Obviously, it's about getting the right man for the job so if more time is needed then it's not a disaster.

However, there's no doubt that the sooner an appointment is made the better. New signings are needed and the boss will need to stamp his influence on the club.

So, this update will please the supporters and it will be interesting to see who does get the job.
