According to The Athletic, Everton could be set to recall Joao Virginia after an unsuccessful loan spell at Championship club Reading.

The goalkeeper has appeared just three times for the Royals since his move from Merseyside, and has made a couple of vital mistakes that have suggested he's not ready for this level of football.

His last appearance in a Reading shirt came back in late September when the Royals went out on penalties to Premier League side Wolves.

In that game, Virginia let a relatively comfortable effort drop out of his hands and into the net.

The shot-stopper was a key player for Everton under-23s last campaign, and many thought that he was deserving of an opportunity to showcase his talent out on loan.

Unfortunately, it really hasn't happened for the 20-year-old and the Toffees look set to bring him back to the club in the January transfer window.

The Verdict

It really hasn't worked out for the goalkeeper during his time in Berkshire, and that means it looks like his short stint at the club is set to end.

It'll be interesting to see what Everton do with him next, and whether they look to loan him out to a lower club or whether they look to keep him in and around the under-23s once more.

He'll be very disappointed with how his loan has gone, and Everton will be hoping that his confidence hasn't taken a big hit otherwise it could be quite a hard few months to come back from for the Portuguese keeper.
