Stoke City apparently failed in their bid to land Curtis Davies from Derby County last week with the defender signing a new deal since.

This report comes from today's Mirror live blog (09:27,) with the defender having seen the Potters come in for him with a £1.5m bid.

However, the Rams obviously were not interested in doing business with their former manager Gary Rowett and have since underlined their preference for Davies to stay put with him putting pen to paper on a new deal.

This, then, underlines that the veteran centre-back believes in the project at Pride Park this season and Frank Lampard will be certainly pleased about that.

The Verdict

Davies was one of the best defenders in the league and would make many sides in the division a lot stronger at the back.

Derby have got him to commit his future to them, though, and in the coming couple of years he'll be looking to return to the Premier League with the Rams.

Meanwhile, we'll have to see who Stoke identify next as a possible centre-half recruit as they too look to get themselves back in the top flight.
