Report rules experienced manager out of the running for Sheffield Wednesday vacancy

on

According to the Sheffield Star, Steve McClaren is not a contender to replace Carlos Carvalhal at Sheffield Wednesday, despite strong links between the former England manager and the Hillsborough vacancy.

The Owls parted company with Carvalhal before Christmas, with the Portuguese boss already back in work, this time with Premier League outfit, Swansea City.

However, Wednesday are yet to appoint a permanent successor, with Lee Bullen remaining in temporary charge of proceedings in South Yorkshire.

McClaren was amongst the favourites to fill the Hillsborough vacancy after leaving his role with Maccabi Tel Aviv, however, the Star is reporting that despite talks taking place between McClaren and Wednesday, he is not a contender for the job.

The 56-year-old has a pool of experience working in England, having managed the likes of Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Derby County, with his last spell in the Championship coming with the Rams and ending in early 2017, after he failed to inspire a play-off push at the Pride Park Stadium.

Wednesday currently sit 14th in the Championship table, 11 points adrift of the top-six, who many expected them to be challenging for.

Bullen oversaw Boxing Day’s 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, and is currently preparing the Owls for Saturday’s clash with Brentford.

The Verdict

Wednesday need to act quickly to find Carvalhal’s permanent replacement, but supporters are likely to be pleased to hear McClaren is not in the frame.

McClaren’s recent spells in England have been disappointing, and Wednesday’s fans will doubt whether he is what the club needs right now.

The next appointment at Hillsborough has to be right, but the club is in capable hands with Bullen at this current time.
