Report reveals worrying Sheffield Wednesday player update

According to the Sheffield Star, George Hirst has rejected a new long-term contract with Sheffield Wednesday, with Carlos Carvalhal confirming that the youngster is not set to be involved with the first-team at Hillsborough in the near future.
The Owls have been looking to tie Hirst down to a long-term contract for some time now, but have failed in their attempts to secure the striker’s future, with latest reports confirming that the 18-year-old England youth international has rejected the opportunity to commit to the Hillsborough outfit.
Carvalhal, who is under huge pressure in South Yorkshire after four defeats from five fixtures, has faced calls from the club’s supporters urging him to hand Hirst his first real taste of senior football, but the Wednesday boss has confirmed that the striker is not with the first-team, and the player’s contract situation is out of his hands.
Speaking about Hirst, who has just two senior appearances to his name, Carvalhal said: “He is not a player who is involved with us. I’m the manager of the club but I’m not a person to do contracts and to talk about these things. It is something that is completely out of my orbit.
“It is not something in my hands so I can’t give an opinion about it.”
Hirst has attracted interest from both Leicester City and Everton previously, with Leeds United also reportedly looking to sign the striker, who has only featured in the England youth set-up this season, due to his contract feud with Sheffield Wednesday. The striker has scored 13 goals for his country, having worked his way from the under-17s to under-20s.
The Verdict
This is extremely worrying news for Sheffield Wednesday and the club’s supporters, with Hirst’s long-term future seemingly away from Hillsborough.
The young striker has plenty of potential, and it is a surprise to have not seen him involved more with the first-team recently, although his contract situation perhaps explains his recent omission.
These are testing times at Hillsborough, with Wednesday struggling in the Championship, and these latest reports on Hirst will not lift the mood.
