Signing free agent Jack Wilshere is not an option for Watford, according to a report from The Athletic

The former England international left West Ham United by mutual consent earlier this summer and is now a free agent.

It is understood that Watford have targetted Wilshere in the past and tried to sign him when he left Arsenal in 2018 but he opted to join the Hammers instead.

The 28-year-old is now a free agent and looking for a move that could kick-start his career but it appears that will not be joining the Hornets.

The Athletic has reported that sources close to the player have indicated that a move to Watford is not an option for Wilshere.

It's unclear whether it is something that the Championship club were considering themselves.

The Arsenal academy product rose to prominence for the Gunners in the early part of the last decade and looked set for a bright future but has seen his career hampered by a series of injury issues.

Wilshere revealed recently that he is considering a move abroad, namechecking La Liga and Serie A as potential destinations.

The Verdict

The arrival of Wilshere would've certainly been an exciting one for the Hornets but given there hasn't been any concrete links and they've got a well-stocked midfield anyway, this is hardly a blow.

The 28-year-old has had a really frustrating career due to injury issues and you'd hope that a fresh start somewhere else can help him get things back on track.

It's a shame, however, as it would've been fantastic to have him in the Championship.
