Chelsea are set to announce Frank Lampard as their new manager in the next 48 hours, according to a talkSPORT.

The Blues are looking to appoint Maurizio Sarri's successor at the earliest of opportunities, and it seems as though they believe that Lampard is the man to take them forward.

Sarri recently left Stamford Bridge, in favour of a move to Italian giants, Juventus.

Whereas Lampard took Derby to a top six finish in his first season in the Championship, but they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

After a surprise win over Leeds United at Elland Road, the Rams were beaten 2-1 in the play-off final at Wembley by Aston Villa, who returned to the top-flight.

The report from talkSPORT also claims that Jody Morris will be following Lampard back to Stamford Bridge as his assistant, so Derby will be on the hunt for a new manager in the near future it seems.

Lampard will be no stranger to his surroundings at Chelsea either, having made 648 appearances for the Blues across a 13-year-spell before leaving the club back in 2014.

His seemingly imminent appointment will be met with a considerable amount of intrigue, and plenty of supporters will consider this as a risky move by Chelsea, given his lack of experience as a manager.

Only time will tell though, and Lampard will be hoping that he doesn't tarnish his glowing reputation at Stamford Bridge heading into the new season.

The Verdict:

I'm not sure this is the right appointment for Chelsea at this moment in time.

There's no doubting that Lampard has done well in his first season in management, but it's a huge step up to the Premier League for any manager.

With Chelsea struggling at the moment, I think there are better and more experienced alternatives out there that they could have turned to.

Wrong place and wrong time for Lampard in my opinion.
