Sunderland have reached an agreement to keep Tom Flanagan at the club, as per a report from Football Insider.

The centre-back, as per the report, was subject to interest from several clubs, including Championship sides, in recent weeks, but this appears to have put the topic of him leaving to bed.

Indeed, he's signed a new deal that will keep him on Wearside until 2022 and in the next couple of seasons he will be hoping to help get the club into the Sky Bet Championship.

The season just gone ended disappointingly for the club with things getting curtailed and fans will want to see them come out of the blocks quickly next season and get up in the promotion places.

The Verdict

Sunderland need to get their squad ready for next season quickly and then move on to trying to win promotion to the Championship.

A third season in League One is not what anyone connected with the club wants but it is where they are and they have to deal with it.

It's good to see Flanagan penning a new deal and committing to the cause for the next couple of seasons, which Black Cats fans will hope see some more positivity return to the club.
