According to reports from the Mirror, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere turned down a £90,000 a week contract to join Championship club Birmingham City.

Wilshere, who spent last season on loan at Bournemouth, has been told by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger he is free to leave the Emirates.

The transfer deadline day famously saw the Championship outfit be linked with the 25-year-old with Harry Redknapp hoping to tie up a successful summer window by bringing the midfielder to St Andrew’s.

Despite the wages offered, Wilshere didn’t want to drop down into the Championship and has instead opted to fight for his place at the Emirates.

The central midfielder infamously started a brawl between Arsenal and Manchester City’s under-23s recently after being dropped down to the youth squad to regain fitness.

Birmingham currently lay 20th in the table with four points from their opening five games.

The Verdict

As good of a player that Jack Wilshere is, offering him £90,000 a week was a giant step too far by Redknapp.

It is no secret that the veteran manager enjoys spending money in the transfer market but offering any player wages like that at Championship level is just plain crazy.

In the long run, it is probably better that Wilshere rejected Birmingham’s offer.
