Aston Villa assistant John Terry turned down the chance to speak to West Brom and Middlesbrough about potentially taking charge at the Championship clubs.

Both sides had been on the lookout for a new boss after the season finished after Jimmy Shan's spell as caretaker ended for the Baggies and Tony Pulis left the north-east club.

And, according to the Times, they had both been interested in speaking to Terry who has built a good reputation as a coach following his work at Villa Park under Dean Smith, which saw the side win promotion last month.

However, despite the 38-year-old having ambitions to be a manager in the future, the update states that he didn't want to leave Villa right now as they prepare for their return to the top-flight, so he declined the offer from the two clubs.

Despite that, reports have emerged suggesting that Derby are keen on the former England captain as a potential replacement for his old teammate Frank Lampard who is set to return to Chelsea as manager.

The Verdict

This is somewhat surprising as Terry has made it clear he wants to be a manager and to have two big Championship clubs interested must have appealed.

But, he clearly felt those jobs didn't suit him and you have to respect his decision as he continues to learn from Smith at Villa.

It also suggests that Derby are going to find it hard to convince him to go to Pride Park if Lampard leaves as expected.
