According to the Northern Echo, Garry Monk’s position at the Riverside Stadium is under increased pressure, with Middlesbrough on a worrying run of form in the Sky Bet Championship.

Less than a month ago, Boro were seemingly on the rise having moved into the play-off zone, but Monk’s side have reacted badly following November’s international break, which is adding to the pressure on their manager.

Boro have suffered three defeats in their last four, including losses to Leeds United, Derby County and Bristol City, which has seen Monk’s side slide out of the top-six and down to ninth in the table.

Monk spent more than £40m on his playing squad following his appointment in the summer, with the expectancy that the Teessiders would storm the Championship and make an instant return to the Premier League.

The Northern Echo understand that the club’s current form is much to the annoyance of owner, Steve Gibson, and despite the Boro leader having a reputation for his patience with managers, Monk is under pressure.

Boro face a tricky run up until Christmas now, with Monk’s side entertaining an in-form Ipswich Town on Saturday at the Riverside, before heading away from home for back-to-back clashes with Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday in the run up to Christmas.

The Verdict

It is no surprise to learn that Monk is under pressure, as his start to life at the Riverside has been far from successful.

Many expected Boro to storm the Championship, but they have been hugely inconsistent and their form following last month’s international break has been abysmal.

You get the feeling that the next three fixtures are crucial, and a clash with Ipswich before testing back-to-back away games mean things won’t be getting easier for Monk.
