Marcelo Bielsa is set to cast aside unwanted Leeds United players, with first-teamers expected to be sent to train with the club’s under-23s.

Leeds moved to announce the appointment of Bielsa late last week, with the Whites bringing the 62-year-old to Elland Road on a two-year deal, which has the option of a third.

The ex-Argentina and Chile boss is due into Elland Road at the weekend, with Leeds back in for pre-season training on Monday.

A report in the Yorkshire Evening Post has taken a look at what Leeds can expect from Bielsa’s arrival, which reveals that players deemed surplus to requirements will be sent to train with the club’s under-23s or moved on.

Bielsa will work closely with those he wants around next season, as Leeds gear up for a big change under the experienced Argentine.

The 62-year-old is inheriting a squad that needs reshaping, after a disastrous year in the Sky Bet Championship.

Despite a good start, Leeds eventually finished 13th in the Championship table, with Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom unable to keep the Whites in promotion contention.

The Verdict

Bielsa is going to be ruthless at Elland Road that much is clear already.

He will have watched footage of Leeds last season and realise the work that needs to be done.

Getting the squad in shape for next season is his first task and the 62-year-old will not want to waste time looking at players he plans to move on.

It might seem unfair, but Bielsa moving players to train with the under-23s is probably a good move for Leeds going forwards.
