James Bree is expected to be drafted into Aston Villa’s starting XI for this evening’s play-off semi-final clash with Middlesbrough at Villa Park.

Steve Bruce is not expected to make wholesale changes to his starting XI for this evening’s contest, but will be without Ahmed Elmohamady, who looks likely to sit out due to injury.

A report in the Birmingham Mail has hinted that it will be Bree drafted into Villa’s starting XI, with Neil Taylor and Axel Tuanzebe also struggling with injury.

Bree has found his opportunities limited at Villa Park this season, with the 20-year-old full-back featuring on just nine occasions across all competitions.

It is likely that Bree will feature on the right side of defence on the official teamsheet, although Alan Hutton, who should be named at left-back, will man-mark Adama Traore, just as he did during the first-leg.

It’s Villa who hold the advantage ahead of tonight’s clash, with Bruce’s side leading 1-0 on aggregate.

Mile Jedinak’s headed goal currently separates the two sides.

The winner of tonight’s semi-final will face Fulham at Wembley.

The Verdict

If Bree starts, it is a huge evening for the 20-year-old, who has found opportunities limited this season.

Elmohamady is a big miss and Villa will be weaker without the full-back starting, which will worry supporters.

Bruce has very little alternative but to turn to Bree, with injuries coming at a bad time for Villa.
