Report outlines Swansea City’s failed transfer pursuit of Bayern Munich star

It’s safe to say that Alphonso Davies is making great strides in the right direction since signing for German giants Bayern Munich.

However, his career path could have been different if he had been granted a work permit with an English club earlier in his time in the game.

The Sun have revealed that Swansea City were previously interested in landing Davies’ signature back when he played for Vancouver Whitecaps, before he completed a move to Bayern Munich.

The Swans were leading the race alongside Crystal Palace to sign Davies, although he wasn’t granted a work permit to play his football in England.

Davies is a Liberian citizen who has a Canadian passport, and has gone on to become a regular for the Canadian senior side at the age of 19.

But due to Canada’s FIFA ranking being too low, it meant that a deal between Swansea and Vancouver Whitecaps couldn’t be reached, much to the frustration of the Championship club.

Davies went on to move to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2018 instead for a fee in the region of £9.84million at the age of 17.

The left-back’s electrifying pace has caught the eye of a number of supporters across the globe, and he’ll be keen to continue his rise through the ranks at Bayern Munich as they edge closer to yet another league title.

Swansea City will be hoping that they can finish this year’s campaign strongly in the second tier though, as they are just three points adrift of the play-off places with nine matches remaining this term.

The Verdict:

The one that got away, that’s for sure!

Davies’ pace at left-back is frightening at times, and you have to feel as though Bayern could probably get away with not having a left-winger in their side, as Davies makes up that much ground in such a short space of time.

Swansea will be gutted they couldn’t get this deal over the line due to work permit issues, as he’s clearly a player that has a bright future ahead of him at the very top.
