Leeds United have been dealt a transfer blow with it emerging that Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal for their January target Daniel James, according to Sky Sports.

The Whites came close to sealing a deal for the Swansea City winger on January transfer deadline day, but the deal fell through when Swansea pulled out at the last minute.

It is widely expected James will seal a Premier League move this summer, after further impressing in the second half of the season, and United now seems to be his likely destination.

However, it appears that Leeds are not yet out of the running as they have told James' advisors to wait for the club to discover their promotion fate, according to TEAMtalk.

The report states that the Whites are prepared to match any offer for the Wales international, while providing a guarantee of first-team football.

Marcelo Bielsa's side could also be interested in his services on a loan deal if he does make the switch to Old Trafford.

James has received wide plaudits for his performances in his 33 Championship appearances this season, and he has now proven he is ready to make the step up to the Premier League.

The Verdict

It will encourage Leeds fans that James' signing could still be on the agenda over the summer, but United's interest has certainly thrown an unwelcome spanner into the works.

It would make sense for James to move somewhere he will play regularly in order to continue his development, so this is where Leeds could come in.

But the United move could prove too attractive for James to turn down, so a loan deal could be a good solution for both parties.
