Sunderland manager Jack Ross is not under consideration to become the new head-coach of West Brom, according to a report by the Birmingham Mail.

The Baggies have been searching for a permanent manager since Darren Moore was sacked unexpectedly over five weeks ago.

Ross, 42, had emerged as a potential candidate to replace Moore, having impressed with Sunderland this season, but this latest report suggests that he is not on the club's radar.

Preston North End boss Alex Neil was the favourite to succeed Moore at the Hawthorns and was expected to be appointed after Saturday's game between the two clubs.

However, Neil instead signed a new three-year-deal to remain at Deepdale, leaving Albion with limited options in their search for a new boss.

James Shan has won four of his six matches as caretaker boss and is now expected to remain in charge until the end of the season, although this latest report suggests that he is unlikely to be given the job beyond the summer.

The club are still considering bringing in a more experienced coach, either to lead the team or work alongside Shan, with Craig Shakespeare and Michael Appleton both thought to be under consideration.

Albion are currently fourth in the Championship table, nine points outside the automatic promotion places and look set to finish the season in the play-offs.

The Verdict

This is very interesting news. It's been over five weeks now since Moore as sacked as head coach of the Baggies and we are no closer to finding out who is successor might be.

The club may have left it too late to appoint a new manager, as any new boss may not have enough time to implement his tactics before the play-offs.

Albion look set to give Shan the job until the end of the season, but perhaps the club will look to bring in a more experienced coach to assist him.
