Details have emerged surrounding the collapse of Antonee Robinson’s proposed transfer to AC Milan on deadline day, with suggestions that a more extensive medical being required but there was no time left.

One of the most surprising moves of the January transfer window was Italian giants AC Milan were in hot pursuit of a left-back and targetted Wigan Athletic’s Antonee Robinson.

The deal looked to all intents and purposes like it was going ahead as planned, with Robinson flying to Italy to complete a medical and seal a dream move, however, late into transfer deadline day, it was revealed that the deal had collapsed and Robinson was to remain a Latics player for the remainder of the season, much to the player’s disappointment:

Details have emerged on Calciomercato.com that the reason for the deal falling apart at the 11th hour was not on Wigan’s baulking around the transfer fee, but the fact that Milan were eager to do more extensive medical work on him before making the deal official. This never came to fruition because of the time constraints at both ends, with the deadline looming.

Robinson’s side of the deal outlined that Milan were requiring more detailed medical information on the left-back before signing the contract, however, the deal is not completely dead in the water and could be done in the summer.

The verdict

It’s not surprising that Milan wanted a comprehensive view of him during the medical, especially if they may have found something that warranted closer examination.

Deadline day is a very hectic time for players, clubs and managers as they push to get deals done before the window slams shut and this was a very unfortunate one.

Robinson has been a vital part of Paul Cook’s side this season and it’s no surprise that top teams are showing a strong interest in him services.

Cook has a dilemma on his hands now of a player that has expressed his desire to move, albeit very amicably, and has to reintegrate him into the side.
