New Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has been given assurances that funds will be available in the January window as he looks to bring in his own players.

Whilst the former Brentford boss will want to see the current squad first-hand, he will also have an idea on what needs to be done in January.

With the club languishing in the bottom half, the winter window already looks as if it could be very important if Villa are to have a successful season.

And, the Telegraph have revealed that despite FFP worries, he will be backed in the market.

As well as that, they state that a left-back and a centre-back are the priorities for Smith, which won't come as a shock given Villa's defensive record.

A major criticism of Steve Bruce was how he kept playing midfielder Mile Jedinak at centre-back, with the club failing to replace John Terry.

The West Midlands side have conceded 20 goals in their 12 games in the Championship this season, with only Preston having a worse record than that.

The Verdict

This is good news for Villa fans and for Smith as even though they have a talented squad, it's clear that new signings are needed.

Additionally, fans will be pleased to see that it appears two weak areas have been identified already as needing improvements.

Villa have generally played right-backs at left-back this season and a midfielder at centre-back, so it's no wonder they have a poor defensive record!
