Newcastle United are set to trigger their option to extend Jacob Murphy's contract according to a recent report from Chronicle Live

Murphy had previously been a transfer target for both Watford and Burnley heading into the summer, but it seems as though this recent report will cast fresh doubt into a move elsewhere materialising.

The 26-year-old had previously struggled for consistent game time with Newcastle United, but has caught the eye with some strong performances in recent weeks for the Magpies.

He has made 28 appearances in all competitions, which includes playing 90 minutes of action in their impressive recent 4-2 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

It had previously been reported by The Sun that both Watford and Burnley were weighing up £6million bids heading into the summer transfer window, although Newcastle look set to trigger their option to extend his stay with the club.

Watford will be preparing for life back in the Premier League, after they won promotion from the Championship under the management of Xisco Munoz.

Murphy and his Newcastle United team-mates are set to return to action on Friday evening, when they take on league-leaders Manchester City, in what is certain to be a tricky test at St James' Park.

The Verdict:

This will be a frustrating update for Watford.

They'll be eager to add players to their squad this summer that have experience of playing in the Premier League, as they look to avoid relegation back into the Championship at the first time of asking next season.

Murphy has shown that he's a versatile option to call upon for Steve Bruce's Newcastle United side in recent weeks, and it seems as though he's made a good impression on the Magpies boss.

Watford will have to look at alternative options heading into the summer, as strength in depth is needed as they prepare for life back in the top-flight.
