Sheffield Wednesday have taken 18-year-old striker Kieran Cummings on trial, a report from The Sheffield Star has revealed.

Cummings is a free agent having been released by Notts County at the end of last season, as the National League side looked to cope with the impact of the current global financial situation.

That is something that Wednesday could now take advantage of, after this latest report revealed that the Championship club have taken the attacker on trial.

It is thought that Cummings played an hour for the Owls' Under 23s on Tuesday, as they lost 1-0 to their counterparts from Millwall.

Described as a pacey wide attacker, Cummings is also said to have been on trial with Wednesday's Championship rivals Brentford earlier in the summer.

The teenager is not the only triallist currently at Wednesday, with former Bolton prospect De'Marlio Brown-Sterling now into his second week on trial with the Owls, who have already signed for Everton youngster Korede Adedoyin permanently this summer.

The Verdict

This could be prove to be a smart move for Wednesday to make.

There are plenty of players further down the system who possess an immense amount of talent that are not always picked up by those further up the footballing pyramid, and it is possible that Cummings could be one of those who is now getting an opportunity.

Indeed, the fact that he has already had a trial with Brentford this summer does suggest there is potential there, and you have to feel that Wednesday could be tempted to make their move as a result of that.

If they do not, they could live to regret it if Cummings goes on to make an impact elsewhere, especially since the fact that he is a young free-agent, means doing a deal for him ought not to be expensive.
