Huddersfield Town's latest signing Danny Simpson came close to joining Celtic earlier this summer, according to Football Insider.

The 32-year-old joined Huddersfield earlier today, signing a deal until the end of the season.

The experienced defender was a free agent after his contract at Leicester City expired earlier this summer and had spent the past two weeks training with Huddersfield while he searched for a new club.

The right-back was able to impress Huddersfield boss Danny Cowley during his trail and has now signed a short-term deal with the Championship club.

However, according to Football Insider, Simpson came close to joining Scottish giants Celtic earlier this summer, but the deal fell through due to his wage demands.

Celtic were unwilling to hand Simpson the deal he wanted, as they felt that he would not play enough matches over the course of the season to warrant the £30,000-per-week wages that he was asking for.

Huddersfield are currently bottom of the Championship table, after taking just one point from a possible 24 so far this season.

Simpson could make his debut for his new club against Millwall in the Championship tomorrow.

The Verdict

This could be a great signing for Huddersfield on a free transfer. Simpson is a very good defender and that fact that Celtic were interested in him highlights how much of a coup this is for the Terriers.

He's got plenty of experience at the top level and the young players at Huddersfield will be able to learn a great deal from his attitude and professionalism.

Huddersfield have conceded far too many goals this season, so but Simpson should be able to add some much-needed quality to their defence.

He should be able to walk straight into the team and he could have a big role to play for the Terriers in the Championship this season.
