Sunderland will hold further talks with Aiden McGeady over his future, but it looks increasingly likely that the winger will not play for the club again whether he can sort out a permanent move this summer or not.
McGeady was one of the high-profile additions at Sunderland upon their relegation from the Premier League in 2017, but the club’s decline has continued since then.
His first season at the club saw Sunderland relegated into League One, with the attacker then unable to guide the Black Cats to promotion last year as they lost the play-off final to Charlton.

A breakdown in relationship with Phil Parkinson led to McGeady joining Charlton in January and stepping back up into the Championship.
Now, a report from The Northern Echo has been looking at what the future holds for the 34-year-old, who has one-year remaining on his deal at the Stadium of Light.
It’s expected that Sunderland will look to move McGeady on, with Parkinson set for talks with the player and his representatives when his loan at Charlton ends. Failure to do that will lead to Sunderland searching for another loan deal for the Irish international.
In 98 appearances for Sunderland, McGeady has scored 27 goals.
The Verdict
Sunderland clearly don’t see McGeady as part of their future if Parkinson is still around, which is fair enough; it should be the manager’s choice who is in his playing squad.
McGeady is a top talent and although he’s past his peak, he’s still a very good player.
A permanent move to Charlton might be good for him, but if nothing else materialises, you’ve got to be confident that the player could source himself a loan move elsewhere.
Getting this sorted later this month is sure to be high on Sunderland’s list of priorities.
