Sheffield Wednesday appeared to pull the plug on extending the stay of Moses Odubajo and Matt Penney at Hillsborough, despite considering offering the pair an extension on their current terms with the club after relegation.

Darren Moore's retained list at the club was revealed yesterday afternoon with Odubajo and Penney joining Joost van Aken, Kadeem Harris, Elias Kachunga, Tom Lees, Joey Pelupessy, Adam Reach, Jordan Rhodes and Keiren Westwood in moving on to a new challenge when their contracts expire later this summer.

However, it has been revealed by Yorkshire Live that Wednesday thought hard about offering Odubajo and Penney fresh terms with the club, but ultimately got cold feet and opted against such agreements.

In the case of Odubajo, it is noted how injury prevented him from making an impression on Moore in a playing capacity.

In total, Odubajo made 46 appearances across all competitions for Wednesday after arriving as a free agent from Brentford. The 27-year-old featured on 18 occasions in the Championship last term, as the club were relegated.

Penney, 23, was a product of Wednesday's youth set up and made 32 appearances for the club, the last of which came on March 6th.

The Verdict

Ultimately, it feels right that Wednesday are releasing all these players.

Moore needs to be bullish with his work this summer and moving on the old guard was an easy decision.

Odubajo and Penney don't really fall into the same category as Rhodes, Lees, Westwood and Reach, which is maybe why Wednesday considered extending their stay.

However, you feel that this is the right decision, with new blood for a new chapter in the club's history now needed.
