Tranmere Rovers are finally back in the Football League after spending three seasons in the fifth tier of the English game.

It seems incomprehensible that a team of their stature should face teams such as Guiseley and Bromley every week, but the National League is an unforgiving place and they were perhaps fortunate to have Andy Cook firing on all cylinders last season.

A dodgy start could have seen them spend even longer out of the Football League, something their demanding fan base would not have stood for. Mickey Mellon saved his job by turning over Boreham Wood in the play off final.

Whilst the joy of a Football League return is welcoming, the task ahead is just as daunting as the one they've completed. League Two is a tight, competitive division with lots of talented players and strong footballing sides.

Losing leading scorer Cook to Walsall was a huge blow and whilst they've drafted in Paul Mullin, the striker only got six goals in league action last season. That tally won't be sufficient for a play-off assault and momentum alone won't fire them to the top seven.

What they need is a sure-fire replacement, a player that is proven in League Two and guarantees a certain amount of goals. Their entire campaign hinges on bringing in the right player, the right partner for Mullin or even the one man who is going to signal they mean business.

Jumping out of the National League can provoke two types of response. The first is carrying on with the winning habit, much like Lincoln, Luton and Bristol Rovers did. That relies on keeping the nucleus of the side together, adding the right face in the right place and keeping much the same as the promotion winning year.

The other path, the one they are desperate to avoid, has already been trodden by Grimsby and Forest Green. That is one of complete overhaul, of losing the good feeling and ending up back in the bottom six of League Two, hunting out directions to Maidenhead United.

Which one will Tranmere follow? Much of that depends on who they announce in the next six weeks.
