Sunderland midfielder Max Power was dismissed for the second time this season in his side's 2-1 win at Bradford yesterday, meaning he now faces a lengthy ban from League One action.

He kicked out in the box following a Bradford City throw to earn himself a straight red card and gift the home side a penalty, which Jon McLaughlin saved. It was an act of petulance which will now mean he faces a four-match ban.

After the game Power was remorseful, offering an apology to the fans, as well as his team mates and Sunderland's staff.

"Firstly I’d like to say well done to the lads for getting the 3 points today. I put them under unnecessary pressure and could of cost the team a huge 3 points," he is reported as saying in the Shields Gazette.

"Secondly, sorry to the players, staff and fans who travelled in great numbers for my actions. I was being trodden on and I’ve reacted in the worst possible way which is resulted in a red card. I’m gutted and take full responsibility for my actions."

The summer signing from Wigan will have missed seven matches of the season by the time he comes back from suspension. To make matters even worse, Power had been captain for the game against the Bantams, an honour bestowed upon him for the midweek game against Peterborough United.

Jack Ross appealed the red card given to the 25-year old against Oxford, but hinted that he would not be doing so this time around.

"I didn't see it at the time. But we understood from the fourth official that it was a kick out. I have watched it and it is a kick out."

The Verdict

It was a moronic thing to do from a so-called professional. He should know better, not just because he's already been sent off once, but because it is obviously something you simply cannot do.

His side were leading 2-1 at the time too, his actions could have cost them valuable point. I would imagine Jack Ross has expressed that sentiment in a rather forceful way behind the scenes.
